Our face makes a lot of movements: chewing, smiling, laughing, showing emotion. But our neck moves more than our face. Think about when you sleep. Your face is in the same state but your neck will move multiple times throughout the night. When you look down at the floor or up at the ceiling, you are stretching your neck.
Over the years, all this stretching, along with the loss of collagen and elastin — two naturally occurring proteins — can cause the neck to age faster than the face. Below Dr. Jonathan Grant of Cascade Facial Surgery & Aesthetics discusses this process.
Why the Neck Appears to Age Faster
Collagen and elastin support our skin to keep it stretchy but also tight. They are the support system that allows the skin to move and stretch but still return to its natural state. As the body ages, it loses collagen and elastin. This is why our skin starts to look wrinkly or droopy. Constant movement of the neck is a contributing factor to loss of collagen and elasticity.
A second reason age may begin to show in the neck earlier than in the face is the daily habit of staring at a computer and/or looking down at a cellphone every five minutes.
Neglect is a third reason. Skin care, facial care and hair care are likely to be at the forefront of our minds, but neck care is not on everyone’s list of priorities. This is unfortunate, as necks need the same amount of attention to be healthy and supple.
Other factors include smoking and exposure to the sun. It is common to wear a hat and sunglasses for sun protection, but necks are regularly left exposed.
Neck Lift
Neck lift is a great remedy for reviving the appearance of your neck and bringing back self-confidence. This surgery involves tightening two muscles located in your neck that bring the skin closer to your jawline and cheeks.
In some cases patients choose to combine neck lift with facelift and other cosmetic procedures for a more even, comprehensive enhancement. Dr. Grant is an experienced facial plastic surgeon who will take the time to assess your unique situation and recommend the best course of action. He meets one on one with each patient and carefully examines their neck and face before advising the patient which procedure(s) will provide the most natural and lasting transformation.
