Prior to your rhinoplasty procedure, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss all aspects of your surgery, including what to expect after. Because the recovery phase plays an important role in the success of your results, Dr. Jonathan Grant, M.D., F.A.C.S., dedicates as much time as needed to discuss details and answer your questions during the pre-op consultation.
Here, the Mt. Vernon facial plastic surgeon shares general guidelines and information regarding rhinoplasty recovery.
Expect to Take One to Two Weeks Off Work
The initial recovery period for rhinoplasty typically takes one to two weeks. Patients who go to school or work desk jobs can expect to return sooner than those with more physically demanding jobs. Ultimately, when you return to work or school will depend on your personal healing progress.
Swelling and Bruising Is Normal
Swelling, bruising and soreness are normal post-op side effects. Dr. Grant may prescribe oral pain medication to minimize soreness and discomfort. The majority of swelling and bruising should subside two weeks after surgery. One week after the procedure, the external splint and sutures will be removed. Makeup can be applied to conceal any residual swelling usually around one to two weeks post-op. Residual swelling beyond two weeks is usually subtle and resolves gradually over the course of one to two years after surgery.
Avoid Exercise and Other Strenuous Activities
Exercise and other strenuous activities must be avoided during the first two weeks of recovery, as elevating your heart rate and straining your body could sabotage your results and lead to serious complications. Most patients are cleared to resume light exercise after two weeks. Vigorous exercise will still need to be avoided for about six weeks and contact sports should be avoided for up to six months to avoid injuring the healing nose. Dr. Grant will provide you with a more accurate recovery timeline based on your personal healing progress.
Don’t Skip Follow-Up Appointments
Expect to meet with Dr. Grant and his staff for follow-up appointments. During these appointments, your surgeon will monitor your healing and make recommendations and modifications as needed to enhance your recovery and help you heal as safely and quickly as possible.
