There are a number of reasons why a patient may decide to undergo rhinoplasty (nose surgery). Some patients request rhinoplasty to improve the overall appearance of their nose and face. This is called cosmetic rhinoplasty. Others request rhinoplasty to address functional issues that inhibit breathing. This is called functional rhinoplasty. Many patients undergo both procedures at the same time.
It is natural to have a lot of questions prior to undergoing rhinoplasty. Some of the main questions that patients ask are about recovery. Most patients are concerned with how long it will take to heal from rhinoplasty and what to expect.
At Cascade Facial Surgery & Aesthetics, we offer both cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty. Dr. Jonathan R. Grant is a board-certified and fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon specializing in nose reshaping. Here, he explains how long it takes to heal from rhinoplasty and what to expect.
How Long Does It Take to Heal from Rhinoplasty?
Every nose is unique and so is the recovery period for every person who undergoes rhinoplasty. For most patients it will take about a year to see final results.
As with most surgical procedures, the rhinoplasty recovery process depends on the extent of the procedure, the patient’s health and the body’s response. Most patients have to take at least one to two weeks off of work immediately after the procedure.
Patients are also advised regarding additional activities to avoid during their recovery period. These activities may include sports, vigorous exercise and even sex. It is normal for patients to have to avoid these activities for at least four weeks. Some patients may have to refrain from these activities for up to two months while they heal. The more careful you are with your nose, the faster you will be able to heal.
What Can You Expect When Healing from Rhinoplasty?
Everybody heals differently. Your recovery and healing will depend on the type of rhinoplasty, your body’s response to the procedure and how well you follow the surgeon’s aftercare instructions.
You can expect pain and swelling immediately after the procedure. You may also experience bleeding from your nostrils and mild bruising. Your facial plastic surgeon will prescribe medication to help with the pain and swelling.
While you are healing you may need to sleep upright. You may also need to refrain from blowing your nose.
Except for the swelling, most of your symptoms should resolve within a few days to week following the surgery. Swelling is often the last symptom to resolve and can take months to fully subside.
