Male vs. Female Rhinoplasty: Is There a Difference?

Male vs. Female Rhinoplasty: Is There a Difference?Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery that can be highly effective for both men and women. This transformative procedure can not only improve the appearance of your nose, but also enhance your self-confidence. However, rhinoplasty is also an intricate process that requires a skilled, experienced facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Jonathan Grant, who has in-depth knowledge of the nasal structures.

Below Dr. Grant discusses how men and women’s rhinoplasty goals differ, who makes a good candidate, the surgical process and how rhinoplasty may benefit you.

Rhinoplasty Goals: Men vs. Women

Broadly speaking, there is no difference between rhinoplasty for men and rhinoplasty for women. However, there are slight anatomical differences between the male and female nose, and the goal of the outcome can often be different.

Women tend to have and prefer a narrower nose while men usually have a wider nasal bridge and tip.

What is the goal of your rhinoplasty procedure? This will depend on your individual anatomy and preferences. During your consultation with Dr. Grant, he can help you determine which approach is best for you.

Male and Female Candidates

Male and female candidates for rhinoplasty include anyone that feels self-conscious about their nose or is in need of repair for the following reasons:

  • A nose that veers to the left or right or is too prominent in the middle
  • A nose that has been deformed from injury
  • A deviated septum, which causes breathing or sleeping problems such as sleep apnea or snoring
  • Large nostrils
  • Inflamed turbinates (thin, curved bone ledges located in the sides of the nasal cavity)
  • Tight or blocked nasal passages
  • A nose that is askew or disfigured

The Rhinoplasty Consultation with Dr. Grant

Dr. Grant is thorough and engaging with his patients. He considers every nose to be unique and looks closely at each case to determine the best surgical approach. He uses Canfield Mirror Imaging software to help his patients choose the right nose shape and dimensions for their faces. After completing his consultation and examination, he will advise you as to the approach that he feels will work best for your situation.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

After conferring with Dr. Grant, you will agree on the best surgical steps forward. The two main rhinoplasty techniques are referred to as “open” and “closed.” In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made on the columella (the skin between the nostrils) that results in a small scar which will fade in a few months. In closed rhinoplasty, there is no incision on the outside. Dr. Grant will work only through your nostrils which leaves no external scar. He will discuss the best method of surgery to achieve your reconstruction and/or alleviate your nasal breathing problems.

Recovery

Recovery usually requires one to two weeks off of work and four to six weeks of no sports, exercise or vigorous activities. A small splint may be necessary as your nose heals but packing the nostrils is not always mandatory. Post-operative symptoms may include but are not limited to: stuffiness, bleeding from the nostrils and mild bruising. Pain medications and elevating your head will help with these aftereffects.
