Despite the tremendous popularity of lip fillers, many people misunderstand exactly what lip fillers can achieve and what the injections entail. Here, Dr. Jonathan Grant sets the record straight on lip fillers by dispelling some of the most common myths.
My lips will look “overdone.”
As long as you select an experienced injector who knows what he or she is doing, you do not have to worry about looking overdone. Prior to the injections, you will discuss your desired results with your injector; after treatment, your lips will look as plump and pouty as you would like!
My lips will feel unnatural.
Thanks to modern lip filler options, your injected lips should feel nearly the same as they did prior to treatment. The fillers we use are formulated with ingredients that do not affect how soft, elastic or mobile your lips feel.
The injections hurt.
Your personal comfort is very important to us when administering lip fillers. We can apply a topical numbing cream prior to the injections to prevent you from feeling pain. Discomfort can also be minimized when small cannulas, which are like needles with a softer tip, can be used for at least a portion of the injections. You may feel a tiny pinch or prick sensation during treatment, but it should be very tolerable.
The results don’t last very long.
Modern lip filler options usually last about 6 months but they sometimes last longer, depending on the product.
On the flip side, hyaluronic acid fillers can be instantly dissolved if you decide you do not like your results. We can inject an enzyme called hyaluronidase to dissolve hyaluronic acid-based fillers, causing your lips to go back to their natural appearance.
I am too young/too old for lip fillers.
Lip fillers can be safely used on candidates of nearly any age, as long as they are least 21. We frequently use fillers to counteract some of the natural effects of the aging process, such as loss of volume.
Anyone can administer lip fillers.
While it is true that anyone can administer lip fillers, the skill and experience of your injector is paramount. Unfortunately there are unlicensed providers who offer counterfeit products, or do not understand how much product to use (or where to use it) to achieve beautiful results.
