Microneedling is one of the most sought-out minimally invasive skin procedures in the United States. This treatment uses small needles to rapidly poke the skin in a targeted area. The microscopic puncture wounds are not significant enough to cause injury, but they do eliminate signs of aging by improving the texture and elasticity of the skin.
Cascade Facial Surgery & Aesthetics offers microneedling to patients looking to address skin issues, including sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin laxness, stretch marks, enlarged pores, acne and scars. Although microneedling is primarily performed on the face and neck, it can sometimes help to clear up issues on other parts of the body.
What to Expect from Microneedling
Our team uses SmartPen, the first microneedling device approved by the FDA following successful clinical trials. The state-of-the-art handheld instrument has dozens of tiny needles that efficiently make small punctures in the skin. While these puncture marks do not cause any lasting damage, they are sufficient to activate the body’s natural healing process. They also increase production of elastin and collagen in the body, which helps to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. These proteins thicken the skin, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and scars.
Most patients experience mild discomfort during the procedure. A topical numbing agent is applied to the skin prior to the treatment to minimize pain. The treatment can last anywhere between 30 minutes and one hour depending on the amount of surface being covered. For optimal results, most patients undergo three to six treatments total, each one scheduled a month to a month and a half apart.
Downtime is minimal, though the patient’s skin is red and swollen (generally resembling a sunburn) for a day or two after treatment. It is safe for patients to resume most normal activities as soon as they leave the office, though they should wear sunscreen to protect the skin when outdoors.
Results are not instantaneous, so patience is key with microneedling. In fact, collagen and elastin production gradually continues in the months following treatment, meaning that the appearance of the skin gradually improves. Peak results usually manifest after a few months.
Who Is Microneedling Right For?
Unlike certain skin procedures, microneedling is a safe and effective procedure for people of all skin tones and types. Patients who are young, old, light-complexioned and dark-complexioned can all see improvement to their skin. Best of all, microneedling poses a very low risk for hyperpigmentation.
Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have recently undergone radiation for cancer, have an active skin infection or who scar easily may not be considered good candidates for microneedling. Please discuss your medical history with the team at Cascade Facial Surgery & Aesthetics during a consultation to determine if microneedling or an alternative treatment is the right choice for your skin.
